Refugee Garden
Every Sunday morning, a group of refugees meet at the Festival Beach Garden in Austin. Located in the southern part of the city near I-35, refugees from places like Bhutan, Nepal and Burundi tend to small plots growing carrots, potatoes, beans and tomatoes. The project is sponsored by the Multicultural Refugee Coalition, a local non-profit. The organization's founder, Meg Erskine said the group started the program after many refugees expressed an interested in gardening, something many did in their home countries, but were unable to do while living in small apartments. The program started at Festival Beach and has since expanded to include gardens at Lanier High School and Gus Garcia Community Garden.
